Arguably the biggest inspiration for the poker boom came after then-amateur poker player Chris Moneymaker beat the World Series of Poker Main Event field in 2003. Seen by poker fans all over the world, Moneymaker’s historic run ushered in a new ear for the sport that saw the game’s popularity rise to new heights.
Often referred to as “The Moneymaker Effect,” this Team Pokerstars player is the one players should thank the next time they sit down at a tournament as there is a 85-90% chance that at least one of the players at that table are playing as a result of Moneymakers unbelievable victory.
Before winning the Main Event, Moneymaker was working as an accountant. After winning a seat into the main event through a $39 satellite tournament on PokerStars, Moneymaker managed to parlay his $39 win into $2.5 million. Soon after his win, Moneymaker was vaulted in to the poker history books and he soon became one of the most recognizable faces in the game.
Although Moneymaker has struggled to live up to his win, he has had some success on the tournament circuit including a second place finish in the 2004 World Poker Tour Shooting Stars tournament. He collected $200,000 for his second place finish. Moneymaker has made over $2.8 million since 2003 and he continues to travel the international tournament scene as a player representative for Pokerstars.
