Poker has a number of ambassadors, but few have played a role in trying to legitimize the game in the same way 2004 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Greg Raymer. A big advocate for the legalization and regulation of the online poker industry, Raymer has put his money where his mouth is repeatedly testifies on the game’s behalf.
A former patent attorney, the cool and collected Raymer came from poker obscurity to the top of the industry after he scored his monster win in Las Vegas. Although he played regularly at Foxwoods Resort casino in Massachusetts, Raymer was considered an amateur player by many before his win. Raymer netted $5 million for finishing first in the WSOP’s big dance.
Unlike some WSOP Main Event champions, Raymer has proven to be a solid player that has the right to be considered one of the game’s elite. In 2009, Raymer finished third in the prestigious $40,00 No Limit Anniversary tournament by outlasting one of the toughest fields in poker tournament history. He collected $774,927 for his solid play and he once again put the poker world on notice that “The Fossilman” is here to stay.
Although Raymer is a tough cash game player, he has had most of his success through tournament poker. He has won over$7.98 million since 2005 and he shows no signs of slowing. Despite being well-known for being a live action player, Raymer frequents Pokerstars when he has time and he can often be found playing lower-limit games on the site.
