Stud Poker Rules

The rules of Stud Poker are simple. Each player receives a combination of cards that are placed face down (hole cards) and face up (up cards). Cards are referred to as “streets.” For example, the fourth card dealt would be referred to as “fourth street” and the sixth card would be the “sixth street.” The final card dealt is always referred to as the river.

The goal of the game is to have the best five-card hand. Betting is usually determined by the type of game being played, with 7-Card Stud and Razz usually being a fixed-limit game while 5-Card stud is better suited towards no-limit or pot-limit betting.

Variant Rules for Stud Poker

• 7-Card Stud- Create the best five card hand using seven cards. Each player receives three cards, two hole cards and a face card. The player with the lowest valued card “brings in” a small portion of the minimum bet, and play continues in a clockwise direction from the bring-in. The next three streets are all up-cards, with remaining players receiving one final hole card on the river. Fixed limit is the most common betting structure in 7-Card Stud.

• 5-Card Stud- Played in much the same way as 7-Card Stud, except that only five cards are dealt. Each player is initially dealt one hole card and one up card. All the subsequent streets are up cards. 5-Card Stud is often played as a no-limit or pot-limit game.

• Razz- Razz is a game of low-cards, and is an intensely strategic poker game. The goal of Razz poker is to create the lowest possible five card hand. Aces are always low and pairs or higher should be avoided. Straights are not counted. A hand of 6-5-4-2-A would be considered a very strong hand. Cards are dealt in the same manner as in a game of 7-Card Stud.
