Betway has surprised us before. The casino was everything that a player could want from a Microgaming establishment, and the sportsbook is on par with any of the ‘big boys’. On the other hand, poker is a world apart — any of the game’s ‘serious’ fans will tell you that. Prevailing wisdom says that you can’t do three things at once and be good at all of them. Will Betway be the exception or the rule?

The first thing that you’ll notice is the clean, clear design — not unusual for Betway, as it’s similar to the Games and Sportsbook sections of the website, but noticeably different from the standard ‘multimedia and lifestyle overload’ of most poker rooms. The website basically says: you are here to play poker. Let’s make it happen.

You can make it happen with either a download or using the instant play option. The latter is not common on poker sites, and it will suit many people — including Mac users and people who don’t always play on the same computer. You lose a small amount of functionality, so the download is still a preferable choice, but we appreciate that we have that choice at all.

Games include the perennially popular Texas Hold’em, as well as less ubiquitous favorites like Omaha, Omaha Hi-Lo, 5 Card Draw, 5 Card Stud, and 7 Card Stud. But wait, what’s this? They offer Razz, too — great news for those of us who lament the fact that, at most, one in twenty poker rooms offer a true lowball game.

Another unusual addition in PokerBet, a fixed-odds poker tournament game in which you bet on, instead of play in, a round of Texas Hold’em. This is both a fun game and an excellent way to get your Hold’em skills up to speed.

The limits and rake are exactly what you’d expect; 5% rake, the industry standard, and everything from microlimits to high-roller levels, though you’ll find much more on the lower end of the scale.

Microgaming’s poker network may not be the biggest, but with one to five thousand players at any given time, you won’t notice any lack of traffic or options. It’s safe to say that you can find the game that you want at any time of the day or night. Also, you can tailor your choices to your own time constraints — have a short break? Try the sit-n-go’s. Got some more time? Plenty of ring games. In for the long haul? You have your choice of tournaments.

Wrap Up

We’ve seen far too many sites fail when they try to tack on extras to their one area of strength — casinos with pathetic poker games, sportsbooks with a few slots, et cetera. Well, in this case, lightning really does strike three times; each part of the Betway site is a worthy competitor in its own right. Betway Poker is just as good as the sportsbook or the casino, and the option of going to all three from the same base account is hard to resist.
