Duplicate Poker is a variation on the poker formula which seeks to lessen the luck aspects of the game. Most duplicate poker games are played in the same fashion as a multi-table tournament using Texas Hold ‘Em rules. However, in duplicate poker, every person at every table will have the same hand as a person sitting at the same seat in another table. So, even if there are one hundred tables being played, a player in seat three will be dealt the same cards as every other person in seat three, and then see the exact same cards on the flop.
Winning in Duplicate Poker is determined by how much you won compared to other people in the same seat as you in other tables, not your overall chip count. It is possible, in fact, to win a duplicate poker tournament with less chips than you started with as long as you lost less than everyone else.
Games of duplicate poker are typically played as no-limit or pot-limit Texas Hold ‘Em, although it is possible to play it using any poker ruleset. Duplicate poker is most often found online, as it is easiest to arrange and maintain even hands using computers.
Duplicate poker is considered to be legal in the United Sated of America, due to the fact that it is classified as a game of skill rather than a game of chance. This has opened up the availability of duplicate poker to US markets where wagering money might otherwise not be permitted.
Unfortunately, the only major online game room for Duplicate Poker has gone offline recently, but stay tuned for updates on duplicate poker gaming.
