Now, let’s look at some of Blackjack’s basic rules:

Blackjack is played against the dealer; you compete with them and no other players. Your main aim is to reach the highest hand possible without going over the value of 21. If you hit another card that takes you over the amount of 21 then you are automatically ‘bust’ and lose the game to the dealer.

The first thing that you need to understand is the card values, so you can understand what exactly you have in your hand and what your next move should be. Cards 2 through 10 are worth the value that is stated on the card, their face value. Face card, jack, queen and king are all worth 10. An ace can be either 1 or 11 depending on how you want to play it, if you have an ace which you are counting as an 11 then it is a ‘soft hand’ as you can pull another card and then use the ace as a 1 if you go over the 21 limit. The best hand that can be held in a game of Blackjack is a ‘2 card blackjack’ which is an ace paired with card of 10 point value.

The game begins with the players placing their bets for the hand; the bets must be placed before any cards are dealt. Once the bets are placed, the cards are dealt, 2 cards to each player and the dealer. The dealers cards are dealt with one face up and one face down, the player’s cards are both dealt face up. After assessing the cards the player must decide whether they want to ‘stay’, ‘hit’, ‘split’ or ‘double down’.

Stay (Stick) – The player remains with the cards they were dealt and see what the dealer has.

Hit – If the player thinks their hand is too low to beat the dealers then they ask for a ‘hit’, the dealer adds an additional card to their hand.

Split – If the two cards the player is initially dealt are of the same value then they can ‘split’ them and have another card added to each card to make two hands. The same bet must be placed on the second hand and then both hands are played separately against the dealer.

Double Down– If the player is confident that they can beat the dealer if they are dealt one more card then they can double the bet they initially made and get one more card only. This option is generally made if the hand totals 9, 10 or 11.

Once the player is happy with the hand then the dealer will reveal their second card and the winner is named. If the dealer has a total of less than 16 then they must hit, and if it is 16 or higher they must stay. The person then with the highest hand closest to 21 wins the game. Bets are paid out 1:1, though if the player has a Blackjack then it is usually 3:2, this does vary depending on the casinos personal rules. In the event of a tie then the hands are both ‘pushed’ which means the dealer and the player both get their original bets back.

Each casino will have variations to the game and different bet amounts and odds, but these basic rules will give you the basis you need to go out and start learning the game and get started on creating a winning strategy.
