For someone new to poker, the different variations can be confusing. What’s the difference between Texas Hold ‘Em and Omaha? What does it mean when the game is pot limit? Et cetera…

We understand. To help you get your bearings, we’ll discuss a few of the different poker games frequently offered online at the following online poker rooms:

Poker Games

The following are a few of the basic online poker games offered by the best online poker sites. Follow the links provided to read more in-depth information on the games, including rules and strategies.

  • Texas Hold ‘Em – The most popular type of poker online, players receive two cards (called hole cards) and then a series of five cards laid on the table face-up. These face-up cards are community cards. In Texas Hold ‘Em, players then try to make the best five card hand using any combination of their personal two cards and the community cards.
  • Omaha Poker – Very similar to Texas Hold ‘Em, players receive four hole cards instead of two. Community cards are laid out as in Texas Hold ‘Em. The goal of the game is to make the best five card hand using two hole cards and three community cards.
  • Draw Poker – Classically, the most popular type of poker. Although now overshadowed by Texas Hold’ Em, most people have had some experience with Draw Poker. In a game of Draw Poker, players receive a set number of cards (usually five) and then exchange unwanted cards for a different set. The goal is to create the best five card hand.
  • Stud Poker – In Stud Poker, players each receive individual cards. Some of these cards are placed face-up for all players to see, while others are for the individual players eyes only. There are variations on this game, such as Razz, where the goal is to create the lowest possible hand.

Betting Systems In Poker

All of the above games can be modified by the type of betting system in place for that game.  Here are the three major types of betting in poker.

  • No-Limit – In No-Limit players can bet or raise as many chips as they want at any point during the game. No Limit games are often very aggressive, with players attempting to price out drawing hands early.
  • Pot Limit – In Pot Limit, the maximum that can be bet at any time is the total sum of the chips in the pot. This makes it very cheap to play in the beginning of a hand, but very expensive by the end.
  • Fixed Limit– In a Fixed Limit, a player may only bet or raise an amount equal to the size of the blinds. In Fixed Limit, a pot can be raised a maximum of four times before the limit has been reached. Fixed Limit games see large numbers of players seeing their way to the showdown, as it is relatively cheap to continue to play.
