Winning a WSOP bracelet is considered by many in the industry as being one of the greatest accomplishments a player can earn. In addition to winning a bracelet, many players come with hopes of dragging the first place prize in one of the million dollar prize pools that seem to take place on a daily basis during the WSOP.

Held at the Rio in Las Vegas during the summer, the WSOP continues to have the longest history of any poker tournament. Debuting in 1970 at Binion’s Horseshoe, the WSOP has gone on to earn its place in American culture and it has become one of the sporting world’s more popular events.

As time went on and the game’s popularity continued to grow, thanks to ESPN’s decision to provide coverage of the Main Event and thanks to the poker boom that happened when amateur player Chris Moneymaker turned $39 into $2.5 million after defeating one of the larger fields in WSOP history. After Moneymaker won gold, he was followed by amateur Greg Raymer who also defied the odds and collected $5 million for his first-place finish. Over the next couple of years, the first-place prize money continued to grow as fields increased until it finally peaked with Jamie Gold’s $12 million win in 2007. Gold defeated 8,772 runners to win his bracelet.

Thanks in part to the poker boom and the media’s ability to bring unparalleled coverage thanks to the Internet, poker players, especially WSOP bracelet winners continue to receive sponsorship deals and promotional opportunities that would have never existed if it wasn’t for the WSOP. In addition to offering poker immortality, the WSOP feeds the poker economy and it is predominantly responsible for helping the game reach its current level of popularity.
